My Story
My birth place, South Bend, IN, was as good a place as any to grow up. Though the opportunities to explore the multifaceted world of production were non existent, I was able to hone many skills that have proven to be a great asset in navigating my way up and around. Through middle school and high school most of my time was spent on the volleyball court. I loved being part of a team and the relationship between coach and player. All that sweat and effort afforded me a full-ride scholarship to Chicago's Robert Morris University.
After moving to Chicago and studying graphic design, I realized that I had fallen more in love with the city than I could have ever imagined. I hung my spandex up and walked off the court for the last time, excited for the opportunity to focus on the exploration and creativity I had been craving.
For about a decade, I entrenched myself in community and took every opportunity I could to experience something new. I met my husband, a fellow creative, along the way and together we reimagined a life. Like most Chicagoans, I juggled multiple jobs before finding something that fit. As a trade show sales manager, I was able to travel, meet new people, and get my first introduction to both print modeling and working events. As the go-to in house model for my company's catalog, I started to realize that these quarterly photoshoots were what I enjoyed most about my job.
In 2017, Stephen and I welcomed our daughter Sage and my priorities shifted massively. After a few months of struggling to handle work and the financial burden of full-time childcare, I decided to stay home and reevaluate how my time was spent. When life pulls the the E-break, the dreams you've put on sleep mode are suddenly awoken. I found myself daydreaming about what being on set was like and telling my babbling baby that growing up I always wished I'd felt reflected in the things I watched on TV or saw in the movies. I longed to feel like my reality existed somewhere other than within my own four walls. My mom was a single parent and I was her very brown, mixed race kid. We lived in a neighborhood where our belonging was often questioned, rarely reflected, and seldomly celebrated.
The expansiveness of TV and Film gave me hope. In a world where ANYTHING is possible, a life that looks like mine could still be a happy one. Now, with each job I book I feel like I am settling that score for little Sierra and being the face or perspective that I was so often hoping to see.
